Frequently Asked Questions for Distance Learning & Online Education

  1. What is outcomes-based education?

Outcomes based education refers to learning directed toward defined achievements and skills. The focus is less on the specific learning activity as on the demonstration of the learning outcome. This ensures that students gain the knowledge and skills in ways they can use them in their lives.

  2. What are ULRs?

These are University Learning Requirements that you must fulfill either by demonstrating that you have acquired the skills and knowledge through previous college courses, life experience, or by taking additional courses that meet the ULR. For example, the Language ULR requires "that you will be able to communicate in a language other than English with native speakers of that language." If you can do this, you may assess out of taking further language courses. The OME program offers courses that will fulfill all of the ULRs. Click here for a list and explanation of individual ULR's.

  3. What are MLOs?

Major Learning Outcomes are specific requirements within your major that demonstrate your mastery for an undergraduate degree in that field. For example, for the Liberal Studies degree completion program, one MLO is Second Language Competence.

  4. If I sign up for an online course, will I ever have to come on campus?

On-line Learning offers you great flexibility in scheduling your study around your other commitments of work and family. There may be times, however, when you might be asked to meet face-to-face with your instructor for orientation, assessment or for types of learning experiences that work best in a classroom or on a field trip. You will be provided ample notice of these "same time/same place" events so you can plan your schedule accordingly or arrange alternatives with your instructor.

  5. Can I take online courses without applying to CSUMB?

There are two ways to accomplish this:
    1. Extended Education courses are open to all, regardless of degree-seeking status. Some online courses and certificates are offered through Extended Education.
    2. Open University permits individuals to take regular college courses on an "as needed" basis to fulfill their own learning or professional needs---without enrolling in a degree program. However, priority enrollment in CSUMB courses is given to students seeking a degree path. Open University enrollment is available on a space-available basis with instructor permission.

  6. My computer is kind of old and slow, but can I still use it for online learning at CSUMB?

A successful online learning experience does not require any elaborate or cutting-edge computer hardware, but investing in a computer of comparatively recent vintage (three years old or less) will prevent many difficulties related to system incompatibility and obsolescence. We recommend that you use a computer equipped with a recent operating system (Vista or XP for PC, OSX for Mac) as well as a broadband internet connection to take advantage of rich multimedia content that may be provided to enhance your online courses.

  7. Can I complete a whole degree or certificate program through online learning at CSUMB?

Yes. At present we offer an online B.A. degree completion (upper division) in Liberal Studies (LSDC), and a primarily online M.A. degree completion program in Instructional Technology (MIST). See Online Degree Completion Courses for more information.

  8. I've never taken courses online before. Is there a way I can try out the online learning environment before I enroll in a course?

Yes, we recommend that you take our brief quiz, "Are You Ready For Online Learning?".

  9. Is online learning at CSUMB the same thing as independent or self-paced study?

No. In online learning you communicate regularly with your "classmates" as well as your instructor. Collaboration with other learners is encouraged, as well as group problem solving and other interactive learning activities. And unlike "self-paced" courses, all CSUMB online courses have a beginning and an ending date, with key outcomes required along the way. We find that this greatly assists learners in keeping on schedule and reaching their academic goals.

Important Things to Know

  • There may be changes to the schedule up to the first week of class. For the most current schedule of courses, please check the course schedules on the Web for Extended Education or Open University.

  • Any changes to your schedule must be student-initiated. Instructors are not permitted to drop you for nonattendance. To make changes to your schedule, submit an add/drop form at the Campus Service Center, Building 47. It is your responsibility to verify the accuracy of your schedule and to retain copies of the transaction.

  • After the first day of class, the instructor’s signature is needed to add a class. Courses that are canceled are automatically dropped from your schedule and a refund is processed.
