American Language and Cultures Program

Summer 2008 : August 1 - August 23

Learn about life in the United States! Practice English, while visiting local sites. Live with host families and attend classes to improve your English skills.

Curriculum

The three-week academic program will focus on:

  • Speaking English

  • Understanding the American way of life

  • Gaining basic survival skills for visitors to the US

Notable Features

  • Instruction customized to match the proficiency level of all students, from beginners to experts

  • Small classes (8-12 students per class)

  • Weekend excursion to San Francisco

  • Day trips to famous sites such as Big Sur, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Point Lobos State Park

  • Homestay with American families

Schedule Highlights

  • Students arrive at the CSUMB campus. The first night accommodations, meals, and an orientation will take place on the CSUMB campus. (Some students may actually be arriving earlier, but we will make accommodations for them in the CSUMB dorms) – No events for host families.

  • Orientation for Students 12 Noon Welcoming barbecue for ALCP Summer students, host families and staff. 1 PM – 2 PM - Host family introduction and brief orientation will take place at the CSUMB dorms. Students will join host families to spend the weekend on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.

  • Start of academic program. Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am – 4pm on the CSUMB campus and Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30am – 3pm in downtown Monterey.

  • Weekend excursion to San Francisco

  • Academic Program continues. Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am – 4pm on the CSUMB campus and Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30am – 3pm in downtown Monterey.

  • Optional Excursion (Host families are invited to join us – reservation required) to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk..

  • Program completion ceremony – attendance optional for host families.
